This is one of my all time favorite novels, and I think that it is Dickens' best writing. This earthy book has an amazing feel -I love the material of the cover. Morone's basic thesis is that a) "popular" American morality is frequently cited as the only thing that can protect "us" from "them," whether "they" are blacks, the Irish, Jews, et cetera, and b) that this emphasis on those frightening Un-Americans is what fuels "moral fanaticism," like prohibition, Comstockery, the VD/social hygiene movement, c) and from this, laws are put into place which persist long after their spawning social movements have died down, leaving them in the hand of fanatics. Instead, I think its purpose is to tell the story of an interesting, complicated cultural phenomenon through the voices of as many of its creators and participants as possible--not just the Factory management team, a couple of superstar bands and Paul Morley, although of course they're all in here, too. He has a great sense of humor though and that keeps the book readable. But if this is the case(and it certainly looks like it), why didn't the Indians continue through Brahm
